I have been a photographer for as long as I can remember, and have been able to pursue it full time since retiring from public education in 2001. My passion is wildlife and nature photography, it offers not only a creative outlet, but the chance to make images that remind us all of what a beautiful place our world really is.
Flowers are a favorite subject. In the northeast where I live, flowers are the heralds of spring, the sirens of summer, and the ghosts of winter. The arrival of each year’s crop is a renewal as gardens, fields, and forests come alive with familiar scents and colors. My approach to flower photography to date has been is to feature the flower itself as main subject. I am intrigued by the delicate sensuality of the stem and bud, the patterns of petal and color, and the delicate structures.
The diverse collection of wildlife species in Canada and the Americas is rivaled only by that of Africa. I enjoy the technical and creative challenge of bringing back images that reflect the beauty and power of wild creatures.
Every animal I have ever photographed is a special spirit. In my wildlife work, I like to be close to the animals to enter their world on their terms. Early on I was amazed at how readily animals accept a human presence as long as their space and freedom are respected. Approaching a group of animals submissively, but deliberately, is actually less intimidating than stalking them. Often the animals will settle down, after sizing up the photographer, and return to their normal routine. Their acceptance is not only a rewarding personal experience, but the key to capturing an intimate portrait that reveals the special personality of each animal.
Photography has always been about capturing in a single image, the essence of a special moment and place. Regardless of what technology is used, making a photograph has always been about selection, interpretation, and presentation. The photographer applies the tools and technologies of the era to the creation of an image that faithfully reflects both the photographer’s experience and vision. In its most perfect form, such an image not only informs, but draws the viewer into the experience on both an emotional and intellectual level.
Our world is indeed a beautiful place, and we should seize every opportunity to celebrate what is right while striving to make our stewardship more perfect. I want my photography to reflect the harmony of the natural world – the delicacy of a perfect flower, the tranquility of sunset, the power of an eagle in flight, or the universal appeal of a new mother and her young.
I am privileged to have the opportunity to share my work with you, and hope you enjoy your visit with nature as seen through my lens and my vision.
Peace and best wishes.
